which they were convinced could be found in the New World. Francisco Coronado heard tales of cities filled with

, the fabled Seven Cities of Cibola. Coronado led an expedition into what is now the
northeastern
southwestern
southeastern
United States and Texas. The expedition totaling nearly one thousand men left Mexico in

. After months of searching, however, the expedition found
no treasure

. Other Spanish explorers, who were known as
sailors

conquistadors
, explored North America, South America and the Caribbean Islands. The European
