John Cabot (Giovanni Caboto) was born Italy, but was sent by
France

to explore the new world. Like Columbus who sailed five years earlier, Cabot thought he could find a better route to the riches of Asia by heading
south
west
east
across the ocean instead of east over land. Henry VII of England granted Cabot
a charter
an army
a pot if gold
and gave him one small ship less than 70 feet long called the Matthew and a crew of 18 men.

, Cabot and his men set sail on a route north of Columbus's route and landed on the coast of
Virgnia

. Like Columbus before him, Cabot believed he landed in

. He named the island 'New Found Land.' When Cabot returned to England, he told everyone he reached Cathay (China). He became an English hero and 'Giovanni Caboto' was given the English name
