As Jamestown grew, its government also needed
to
stay the same
change and grow

Jamestown needed a group of people to make
soup
laws
sandwiches
.
So, in 1619, the governor of Virginia called the first meeting of the
General Assembly
House of Burgesses
U.S. Senate
.
The General Assembly included two citizen representatives from each division. These representatives were called
senators.
burgesses.
hamburgers.
Burgesses were elected by
all Virginians.
some free adult men.
all men.
The burgesses met together with the governor's council
as one
legislative (law-making)
healthy
body.
Around twenty years later, in the
1640's,
1680's,
1740's,
the burgesses began to meet separately from the Governor's Council as a body called the
House of Burgesses.

The

was the first elected law-making body in North America.
Today, we call Virginia's current law-making body
the
Virginia Parliament
