• Patrick Henry: Outspoken member of House of Burgesses; inspired
colonial patriotism with “Give me liberty or give me death” speech
• Benjamin Franklin: Prominent member of Continental Congress; helped
frame the Declaration of Independence
• Thomas Paine: Journalist, author of Common Sense
